A lot of beginning writers are interesting in what they should do to break into the writing world. It can be scary and difficult to get started, but there’s no reason why you can’t or shouldn’t. If you want to be a writer, you can be a writer. You can even get started today.
Here are a few tips to get you going:
If you’re intimidated, start small
You can always break into novel writing by starting with short stories or poetry. I know poetry doesn’t have the same structure as novel writing, but it will help you be descriptive and focus on getting to the point of your ideas. Writing a short story is a great way to focus on how chapters are built. You don’t have to jump into a huge project right away; you can build up to it.
Find a writing group
Check out your local library and see if they have any writing groups available. If you’re in high school, this is a great resource and it will help you connect with other people. If there isn’t one, consider starting one and inviting other people to join. Connecting with people who share similar interests is a huge help. It can even be done online, so search for something that you feel comfortable with.
Learn plot structure
Understanding how to structure your novel is huge when you’re a beginning writer. It’s what I struggled with most when I first started. You need to have structure if you want your novel to be readable. Learn story arcs. All of this can be found online or in books, so do your research before you tackle your first project.
Read, read a lot
Reading is so important when you’re a writer. You’ll absorb so much information on how to write just through reading often. I’m sure you were influenced by something, so try focusing on books in the genre you want to write in. Don’t give up reading for writing. You need to do both.
Beginning writers should always have a notebook ready. Any ideas you have, make sure you jot them down. They might not seem important or very good at the time, but they’ll be useful when you’re stuck later. Brainstorming is a great way to find inspiration and motivation.
Focus on prewriting/planning
This has to do with structure, but beginning writers should learn how to prewrite and plan out their novel beforehand. You might not get far if you don’t have a plan OR you’ll lose motivation. Some writers lose inspiration if they don’t have any idea of where to go next. More experienced writers might get away with it, but as a beginning writer I would suggest planning out your novel as much as possible first.
Let yourself become more observant
As a writer, it helps if you become more aware of the world around you. Chances are you’re probably already a pretty observant person if you want to write. However, you also need to research if you want to understand something inside and out. Learning how to research and observe is an important skill for any writer.
